For those of us that are obsessed with our lawns, we are smack dab in the middle of our playoff season, our March Madness, our Wimbledon. For these few short weeks in April and May we get to see our grass transform from brown and thin into thick and green. We look forward to starting up the mower, smelling the sweet exhaust, and seeing clean, sharp lines on our lush suburban oasis. I love the early morning sunshine with it's long dark shadows overlaid on a perfectly trimmed yard.
Soon the sun will become too strong - the morning dew not enough to keep the grass quenched. Soon the soft green will begin to fade and give way to brown. The weekly cutting ritual will again go from opportunity to obligation. From enjoyment to annoyance. From cool spring evenings to smoldering hot afternoons. Soon we will yearn again for the embrace of Spring.
You probably did not know this, but Rich Mullin's song "The Color Green" was inspired after cutting his grass. True story. Really. Seriously. No joke. Honest. For real. Who would joke about that? Is nothing sacred around here? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BbW4xwkQOLQ
