Birthday XXXV

Birthdays on the weekend are just so much better than birthdays on week days, don't you agree?  Last year was a Saturday, this year was a Sunday, and I think I have to wait until I am 40 to get back to the sweet spot :(

We had our big birthday breakfast on Saturday morning so that we could really relax and enjoy it.  Karin asked me what I wanted and she delivered!  Carmel Soaked French Toast, real Jimmy Dean sausage, and Starbucks breakfast blend java....yum.  My favorite part was when the kids had left the table to go destroy something in the house and Karin and I were able to sit around the table in blissfull quiet and chat for 48.5 seconds.

Saturday night was the big joint birthday party for Karin, Bruce, and I at the Wray's house.  It was an adults only gathering and I have to say....I am really liking these events.  Don't get me wrong, I love all the kiddos, but I like all the associated chaos less...  Lynn threw down a fun Mexican themed feast with a favorite guacamole dip, steak burritos, and some fantastic veggies.  She topped it all off with her world...nay...galactically famous carrot cake.  For some of the hill-air-e-us conversation topics head over to Amy's blog of the night: http://franklyjournaling.blogspot.com/2011/03/wray-family-birthdays.html .

Sunday consisted of church followed by an enjoyable lunch with one of our Young Life leaders - the famous Emily Broadway, and then on to an Ellie and Ava requested game of Settlers of Catan.  Personally I think you should let the birthday boy win but my fellow Cataninites did not agree.  Ave absolutely dominated us all and won the game probably...4 or 5 rounds before second place even showed up.  Sad but true.  Karin delivered big for 2nd place, Ellie slid in a fairly solid 3rd, and I labored to achieve even 8 victory points.  After the game Karin compasionately said that we should really look at my strategy to see why I always come up so short - since this result is not that uncommon for me.  Fortunately I enjoy the "planning" aspect of the game more than anything and don't really need a victory to enjoy the process.  A life theme for me...enjoy training for a race more than the race, savor the planning of a camping trip as much as the trip, love creating the initial project plan for a new project more than delivering said project plan :)

We opened presents and then moved to DINNER!  On request Karin made me a birthday feast of pulled beef bbq w/ homemade bbq sauce, homestyle mac n cheese, homemade coleslaw, beans, and of COURSE - a funfetti  birthday cake...b/c you know what they all say, "it aint a birthday without funfetti."  This was actually the most fancy funfetti cake I have ever seen...quite impressive really.  Branson really got into singing the happy birthday song and even added in some choice potty words as only a boy can...

I'll also say this; facebook makes for a kind of fun little birthday surprise.  I checked e-mail around 3PM and found all kinds of little notes from friends scattered near and far.

A great weekend and a memorable birthday.
