Young Life 5K

This pas Sunday was the annual Young Life 5K organized by our region as a fundraiser for kids who want to go to camp this summer.  This event has been growing each of the last three years and had about 500 runners yesterday - a growth of 100 runners from last year!

My mom, sister, brother-in-law, and niece all happened to be in town and I suckered them into coming out to help.  We all ran the water aid station on turn 2 of Lowes Motor Speedway (which is where the race is run).  We all commented (many times) how BIG that track is and how you really don't appreciate the size till you try to walk 25% of it to get to your water aid station....

We worked out a good system to have water available to both people interested in racing as well as those just participating for fun.  Wayne and I were the people out in front holding out water for the people who were racing.  Let me tell you - handing off a one quarter full cup of water to a person running at 5K race speed is no easy feat.  My first handoff was a total disaster...  The guy came running by, I handed out the cup, and what followed next can only be described as a gigantic explosion of water.  The guy got lots of water....but none in his mouth.

Our very own Ellie Drescher ran the race this year for the second time.  She ran with her friend Meg and they both did fantastic.  Ellie finished with a time right around 30 min flat.  An awesome accomplishment for an 8 year old if you ask me.
