Do you remember what it was like having birthdays as a kid? The excitement; the anticipation; the thrill of it all... As adults we lose this - or at least lose the extremes of these birthday emotions. However, this year I got a fun reminder of what it used to be like...
I usually have lunch at Ellie's school on Wednesdays. This week when Ellie and her class saw me walking up they were all were smiling and pointing at a big yellow hat. Ellie had shared that my birthday was on Thursday so the class decided to make me one of the birthday hats that all the kids wear on their big day (they have apparently seen through my mature, responsible, adult facade and have decided to treat me like one of their own). It was like being a celebrity - everyone was waving and smiling at me. All the teachers and lunch room helpers all wished me a happy birthday...I signed autographs...it was quite fun!
Ellie doesn't know it, but she gave me a present you can't find in stores - she reminded me what it was like to celebrate your birthday as a 6 year old.
