The Fattened Calf

You know how in the old testament when something really special happened, they would go out back, kill the fattened calf, and party like it was 1999?  Today was kind of a day like that....

Ava had her very first ever modeling gig today.  She and Karin had done a bunch of work over the summer to get her all lined up with an agency, Lindsey had taken pictures to put in her profile, and we got no action - nadda.  Then out of nowhere last Thursday, Karin got an e-mail saying Ava had been booked!?  Not "would you like her to be booked" or "has anything really major changed since the last time we saw her and do you want to do this gig" kind of thing....just plain booked.  Committed.  We were excited...and hesitant...because since the pictures that these folks used to select Ava had been taken, she had gotten her hair cut by over 6 inches & she lost a small tooth on the bottom.  So Karin did the right thing and called them to mention that her hair was a little shorter and she had one less tooth...  They asked for a few current pictures and decided that they definitely still wanted her.  Does Ava not come home from school that VERY afternoon all proud of herself for losing a HUGE FRONT TOOTH!!  We are talking about a gaping hole the size of a bowling ball....well almost.  We thought oh well...if they were ok with one tooth gone then why not two.

Fast forward to this morning.  Karin set an alarm.  Do I need to say more?  Ava commented on how weird it was to see the sun come up when it was still dark...  And they left early for Highpoint to go to the studio.  Ava had a blast.  She got to wear 4 or 5 outfits and take all kinds of pictures.  They asked her and her new friend Ava D (yes, Ava D...as in another Ava D) to stay after the other kids left for a few extra shots and she wrapped things up after an hour and a half.  The significant thing about it taking an hour and a half is that she was getting paid - paid per hour.  She was getting paid more per hour than I make per hour....more than Karin or I have ever made per hour....and she is 6?!  So she walked away with some serious bucks...and it was burning a hole in those skinny jean pockets!

Karin asked her what she wanted to do with her new found wealth and she said "buy a Zhu Zhu pet toy thing."  Then she said "I want to take our family out to dinner...to get spicy chicken!"  Huh?!  Well guess what we did tonight?  We went to Target, she got her little toy, and she bought us all General Tso's chicken...at 6 years old!

We found it to be a great "teachable moment" as well b/c when she got home from school (yea, she skipped school to go to her job but we made her finish the day!!!) we all gathered in my office and we did her finances up on the whiteboard.  We took her earnings, took out tithe, took out savings, took out the gas money that it cost to drive to Highpoint, and then showed her the net result.  It was really fun.

Here's to the fattened calf!

ps - if we get a chance to see her in the Hamrick's (http://www.hamrickshosting.com/hamricks/index.html) Easter catalogue, we will post it up here.
